The Lexus Hybrid Sedan: The GS 450h

Lexus GS 450h hybrid
The Lexus 450h GS Hybrid Sedan was revealed March 23, 2005 at the New York Auto Show. The Lexus GS 450h goes on sale beginning the spring of 2006.

Features:

It will be a rear wheel drive full hybrid making it able to travel at low speeds under electric propulsion alone. It shares the similar hybrid technology as found in the Lexus GS 450h Hybrid SUV.

The 2007 Lexus GS 450h is the world's first hybrid luxury sedan and the first full hybrid vehicle with a front engine and rear wheel drive.

It will have a 3.5 liter V6 engine combined with a permanent magnet motor. Lexus says it will have horsepower equivalent to a 4.5 liter V8. 0-60 acceleration is expected to be under 6 seconds. For perspective, the 2006 GS 430 has a 4.3 liter V8 that has 300 horsepower. GS 450h is tuned for even more performance and has the rear-wheel drive to handle it.

The engine, when mated with the high-torque electric motor will produce more than 300 horsepower. The immediate power delivery of the electric motor helps the car in the 30-to-50 mph passing maneuvers. Fuel economy numbers should average in the high twenties and will most likely be certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle.

Features include 18-inch light-alloy wheels and a new power meter that replaces the tachometer. Of course the badge on the trunk will also reflect the hybrid powertrain. All other features, including dimensions, match with the standard GS 430.

That would put the GS 450h in the $55-60,000 dollar range, a steep number indeed.

Based closely on the new GS luxury sport sedans, the GS 450h is designed to be the premium model in the GS series, with all of the performance, luxury and safety features befitting a flagship. Many of the optional features from the GS 300 and 430 will be standard on the GS 450h.

Fuel Economy (city/highway) Similar to the average 2-liter, 4-cyl. compact sedan 18/25
