Toyota to Build Prius Hybrid in China December 2004
Japanese automaker Toyota may begin producing hybrid cars in China starting next autumn, it was reported Tuesday.
Tokyo financial daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Japan's largest auto manufacturer will enter into a joint venture with a Chinese company to produce between 2,000 and 3,000 Prius cars a year.
If the plan goes through, it would be the first time Toyota produced its environmentally-friendly car outside of Japan.
Toyota is expected to invest $28.5 million (3 billion yen) in the project, the Nikkei reported.
