Toyota Sienna Hybrid August 2004Toyota will offer the first hybrid-power minivan on the retail market in 2005. The hybrid Sienna will likely use the same powertrain as the Highlander Hybrid SUV and related Lexus RX 400h. This combines a specially tuned gasoline V6 with a high-torque electric motor and high-capacity battery, but works in essentially the same way as the system in Toyota's subcompact Prius hybrid car. Toyota says the scaled-up V6 system delivers up to 270 hp total, allowing the SUVs to do 0-60 mph in less than 8 sec. The hybrid Sienna should be little slower. Toyota also promises small-car fuel economy--expect the minivan to return high-20s overall--plus super-low emissions. | ||
