Toyota Rolling Out Even More Hybrid Cars Pre Fuel Cell March 2005

Toyota is committed to roll-out a wide variety of hybrid petrol/electric vehicles before the mass marketing of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles begins in about 15 years, according to Toyota New Zealand executive chairman Bob Field.

He told motoring writers at the launch of a new Daihatsu Sirion that the Toyota Motor Corporation was the first company to market hybrids and it was now selling its technology to rival motor companies.

Other motor manufacturers had initially dismissed hybrid technology as a stop-gap measure but they had now recognised that the world could not afford to wait for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Mr Field said it had taken more than 100 years for the number of motor vehicles in the world to reach 700 million, but this number would treble by the year 2050.

"Most of the growth will be in developing countries, and one cannot deny their people the right to personal transport.

"However, without a major reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle, the growth in vehicle numbers threatens to cause major climatic change and catastrophe," said Mr Field.

Light duty motor vehicles remained the dominant transport polluter.

Mr Field said Toyota advocated a carbon tax should be placed on all fossil fuels, but this tax should be a "neutral tax" with offsetting relief in corporate tax and for those at the lower end of the income tax scale.

Drivers could make an immediate contribution to mitigate the adverse impact of this trend by downsizing their vehicles.

He said, for example, that if everyone drove a Daihatsu Sirion it would immediately contribute to all seven goals of the World Business Council of Sustainable Development.

Drivers of "gas guzzler" vehicles should be encouraged to think of alternative choices, or be prepared to pay more for the environmental cost they were causing.
