Toyota Eyeing Production of Hybrid Camry May 2005

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to begin production of a hybrid vehicle based on its Camry midsize passenger car in the United States in 2006, company officials said Thursday.

The project in Kentucky will mark Toyota's second overseas production of an environment-friendly hybrid vehicle as the biggest Japanese automaker plans to start producing its Prius car in China this fall.

Hybrid vehicles run on electricity and gasoline.

Camry is the best seller in the U.S. passenger car market with sales reaching 420,000 units last year and Toyota believes application of hybrid technology to the model will become commercially viable in the medium to long term, the officials said.

Toyota is due to carry out a full model changeover on the Camry in 2006.

Toyota and rival Japanese automaker, Honda Motor Co., dominate the expanding market for fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles.

The Kentucky project has emerged while Toyota and U.S. carmaker General Motors Corp. are reportedly discussing ways to boost their cooperation in developing eco-friendly vehicles.

In December, GM and DaimlerChrysler AG said they were teaming up to develop fuel-saving hybrid engines in hopes of cashing in on that market.
