RailPower Technologies Sells Three Green Goat Locomotives for U.S. Army Bases September 2004

RailPower Technologies Corp. says its U.S. subsidiary has sold three Green Goat switcher locomotives to the U.S. Transportation Department for use in army bases.

Financial details were not disclosed in a release Thursday. Vancouver-based RailPower's hybrid locomotives feature small diesel engines and large banks of recyclable lead-acid batteries.

Remanufactured from existing switcher locomotives, they cut fuel consumption by 40 to 60 per cent, smog-inducing nitrogen oxides and particulate emissions by 80 to 90 per cent and greenhouse gases by 40 to 60 per cent, compared with conventional railway yard switchers.

The U.S. department's Volpe National Transportation System Centre at Cambridge, Mass., awarded the purchase contract to subsidiary RailPower Hybrid Technologies Corp of Erie, Pa.

The locomotives are to be used on army bases in Barstow and Sierra, Calif., and Fort Lewis, Wash.

"The order brings with it the potential for wider adoption of the technology throughout the U.S. military and Department of Transportation locomotive fleets," RailPower CEO Jim Maier said in a release.
