North Carolina Introduces State's First Hybrid Electric Transit Vehicle September 2004To the people who live in Raleigh, a new trolley may not look like anything special. But looks can be deceiving. North Carolina came out with its first hybrid-electric transit vehicle. The one-of-a-kind trolley has emissions which are between 50 and 75 percent less than a diesel-powered engine's. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said the trolley is only one step to creating a more environmentally-friendly city. "Well there are going to be two, the other one will be replaced this winter, so we just have two," Mayor Meeker said. "Our main fleet is the bus fleet. We have low-sulfur fuel buses now, so we are working on that as well." The trolley will be used on the Showtime trolley routes that transport people from the City Market area to the BTI Center. It will also be used for the historic trolley tours. | ||
