LG Chem to Charge Up US Hybrid Cars August 2004

Seoul - South Korea's largest chemical firm, LG Chem, on Monday said it had won a contract to develop a battery for hybrid-electric cars from a US consortium of General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler.

The $4.6-million (R30.45 million) deal is for LG Chem to develop new lithium-ion polymer battery cells for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) until August 2005 for the United States Advanced Battery Consortium.

LG Chem said its research arm in the United States, Compact Power, would be in charge of developing the battery's management system, electronics, and software for the project.

Sponsored by the US energy department, the US consortium was launched in 1991 to develop advanced energy storage systems for the environmental-friendly HEVs.
