LAX Receives CNG Hybrid Buses January 2005

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has taken delivery of two CNG-fueled series hybrid buses. Manufactured by Hybrid Bus Technologies and powered by UQM Technologies drivetrains, the low-floor hybrid buses will be used as passenger shuttles.

A CNG-fueled 2.5-liter Ford industrial engine powers a 100 kW UQM generator, which in turn provides electricity to drive two 100 kW UQM propulsion systems. Regenerative braking recharges the battery pack. Each 45-foot transit bus features a low floor design with no interior steps that makes it easier for passengers to step on and off the bus, and can transport over 100 passengers.

Los Angeles World Airportswhich owns and operates four airports: LAX, Ontario International, Palmdale Regional, and Van Nuysruns an 800-vehicle fleet, 50% of which are powered by alternative fuels. LAX also operates natural gas fueling stations for its vehicles, and recently opened one of the nations first compressed-hydrogen fueling stations to showcase the storage and dispensing of compressed-hydrogen fuel.
