Hybrid Owners Are Laughing the Hardest May 2005

I am not understanding why so many citizens are calling upon the federal government to institute policies that will, as they say, reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

No member of the federal government (or anyone else, for that matter) put a gun to my head and told me to buy a sport utility vehicle. One can't blame Ford for coming out with the Explorer, the SUV that was so incredibly popular that every other carmaker had to emulate it.

If you want change, then do it -- don't wait for the federal government. Stop driving your car, and use TriMet. Walk to the store instead of driving, and buy a cart for your shopping bags. On longer trips, consider Greyhound or Amtrak. If you currently own an SUV, trade it in for a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle, such as a hybrid.

If you have more than one car, consider selling all but one car, and car pool as a family. You have the power to reduce fuel consumption, and with your power, you can dictate to the corporations. By continuing to buy SUVs, you are also telling the corporations to make more of them.

In response to the article, "Motorists have dozens of ways to pass the pump" (April 25), come on, do you really think there is not much difference between a Honda and a Hummer when filling your gasoline tank?

Of course everyone is feeling the record-high gas prices, but I can assure you that those Honda drivers are laughing at the Hummer (and other assorted sport utility vehicles) drivers when sitting at the pumps, and the Honda owners driving hybrids are in hysterics.

Think about it. SUVs require more gas. The price of oil continues to rise as less is available. The situation is getting worse.

Most SUV drivers could downsize to a more economical mode of transportation. Maybe if the SUV drivers would think about this, we would all pay less at the pumps and not be unloading coffins returning on flights from Iraq.
