Hybrid Cars in Iowa September 2004Rising gas prices is just one reason the waiting list to buy a "hybrid" gas-electric car may be getting longer in Eastern Iowa.At Toyota Dealers in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, if you place an order for a "Prius" model today...it might take a year to a year and a half to see it arrive. Ford dealers expect to see the first hybrid sports utility vehicles on lots by year's end. But they say a waiting list is a certainty for that type of vehicle as well. Honda dealers report shorter waits for the two types of hybrids they offer now. Hybrid vehicles combine gas and electric motors to produce extreme fuel savings without the need to recharge batteries. Those type of vehicles also produce less emissions than regular vehicles. Dealers say some buyers have figured out ways to "jump" higher on the waiting lists. Some people have sold their spots in line to potential buyers farther down the list. One Toyota dealer says the waiting time to buy a hybrid nearly doubled after gas prices shot up last winter. Some California dealers have even offered to buy hybrids owned by Iowans to sell at a premium to buyers in that state who don't want to wait. SOURCE: KCRG | ||
