Hybrid Cars at The Academy Awards February 2005Oscar night's high-octane red carpet is going green. Many celebrities will arrive at this year's Academy Awards, to be presented Sunday at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Calif., in high-mileage, low-emission Toyota Prius hybrids.Participants in environmental group Global Green's third annual "Red Carpet-Green Cars" campaign include Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, Robin Williams, Orlando Bloom, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Morgan Freeman, Julie Delpy and Tim Robbins. "Hybrid cars help us conserve natural resources and preserve the planet," Bloom said in a statement Tuesday. "Choosing a hybrid is something everyone can do today to help reduce our negative impact on the environment." The Toyota Prius is one of several fuel-efficient hybrid cars that run on a combination of gas and electricity and emit fewer harmful fumes than regular vehicles. Celebrities participating in the event will receive a gift bag containing eco-friendly products, including a "conflict-free" cultured diamond pendant or lapel pin valued at $2,500 to $3,500 from Diamonds for Humanity, an organization that promotes "luxury with conscience." The cultured diamonds "have the exact DNA structure of earth-mined diamonds, yet involve no human or environmental sacrifice," according to a statement by the Gemesis Corp.
