Hybrid Car Demand Rising As Summer Approaches March 2005

Right now, predictions for summer gas prices are rolling in and it's not a pretty sight. Newscenter's Ryan Kath tells us why hybrid fever is rising. It's rising because when temps rise during the next few months those long drives to the cabin won't be quite as inviting at $2.50 per gallon.

That's why more people are turning to hybrid models, because the combination of using electricity with the traditional gas power makes it known for great mileage.

Right now, lower gas mileage might sound nice but the biggest roadblock could be actually finding one.

As consumers rush to get behind the wheel of a hybrid vehicle, the sales pitch has never been easier.

"People just come in wanting one," said Brad Vigesaa, from Rochester Ford-Toyota.

They want the new technology so bad many buyers are willing to wait months for a hybrid instead of driving away with a typical ride.

"Yep. Nine out of 10 times that's what happens. They already know there are waiting lists all over."

At the Toyota dealership, the wait is more than a year for the Prius model which claims to get up to 60 miles per gallon. The only cars left on the lot are for test drives and a blue one that already sold to a man way down in Texas.

Down the street, the Honda dealership has a few Civic and Accord hybrid models ready to roll. Salesmen say they were prepared for the rising demand.

"The first time prices went up to $2.05, we were flooded."

Flooded with people wanting to experience the fuel-saving electric motor known for its quiet ride and friendship with Mother Nature.

"What's coming out of the tail pipe? Not much."

Ford is also waiting for a shipment of their Escape hybrids to arrive. After favoring higher pollution areas like California manufacturers are realizing Minnesotans also care about keeping the air clean.

"And that's why I think we have a longer waiting list is that people know better and know what to do to help the environment."

And to respond to the increased demand, Ford, Toyota and Honda along with other dealers will all be coming out with new hybrid versions in the next few years.
