Firefighters Receive Hybrid Car Safety Training April 2005EVCT has trained over 1900 area firefighters to respond to hybrid vehicle accidents.EVCT personnel have now trained over 1900 metro area firefighters and emergency response personnel to safely respond to an accident with new hybrid vehicle technology. Additionally, the Oklahoma Council of Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) recently certified this course for 3 hours of law enforcement training credits. The firefighters and responders learn how to identify a hybrid electric vehicle as well as special emergency precautions dealing with the high voltage battery pack, cables, autostop features, and extrication procedures. Classroom discussion is followed by inspection and demonstration of the schools training vehicles. EVCT designed the curriculum and is conduction training with state-funded dollars in an effort to keep emergency response personnel safe from workplace hazards. At the end of the course emergency responders will be able to: · Identify hybrid vehicles · Understand how hybrids work · Know the special equipment and materials necessary to overcome safety hazards surrounding electric drive vehicles in an emergency situation · Know how to isolate the high voltage system in electric drive vehicles · Know the special procedures to follow if fire involves an electrically-powered vehicle.
