Connaught Type D Hybrid Sports Coupe September 2004

A mould-breaking sports coupe with great power but green credentials could be built in Coventry, it was revealed today.

The brainchild of two ex-Jaguar Cars consultant engineers, the 150mph Connaught Type-D is powered by electricity and petrol to produce ultra low emissions.

Derby-based company EPM Technology will build the £35,000 new car, which will have a 2.1 litre V10 engine.

Talks are in progress about creating a manufacturing facility in Coventry and production is scheduled to start in May 2006.

The project has the backing of the Energy Saving Trust which has to date provided £461,000 of funding. A total of £5 million of investment is needed to get the car into production.

Around 50 cars will be produced in the first year but Connaught hopes to eventually sell 2,000 of the vehicles annually throughout Europe.

Connaught describes the ultra-light car not so much as hybrid as a "HigherBred".

The two ex-Jaguar men behind the project are Tony Martindale and Tim Bishop who said that when drivers put the car into sport mode they get "a Formula One car at half speed".

Mr Martindale described the car as ecologically sound, with great looks and which will drive like a thoroughbred.
