Automakers Applaud Bush Tax Incentives for Hybrids April 2005

Automakers are praising President Bush's call for incentives to boost sales of energy-efficient vehicles. The companies say the tax credits would help drive more of the technology into the marketplace.

White House officials say the energy-related proposals would provide $2.5 billion in tax incentives over ten years. Consumers would receive a credit of up to $4,000 if they purchase a hybrid or clean-diesel vehicle.

A Ford spokesman says the incentives will help overcome the 15 to 25 percent extra cost of hybrids.
