Albuquerque To Get Hybrid Buses September 2004Albuquerque will get more of a big-city look beginning in December when 12 new 60-foot "articulated" buses begin rolling down Central Avenue. The buses have two sections connected by a sleeve and bend in the middle. The red and gold "Rapid Ride" buses will zip along Central Avenue aided by traffic equipment that will give them green lights. The priority signal system will hold a green light for buses or shorten a red signal. "These are supposed to be mass people movers," Mayor Martin Chavez said at a news conference Tuesday. Chavez unveiled the first bus and took city workers and reporters on a short inaugural spin around a few city blocks. Each bus can seat 57 passengers with room for 29 standing passengers. The initial route takes the buses from Unser Boulevard on the West Side to Wyoming Boulevard and then to a transit center under construction near Coronado Center. "This service is such high quality that we expect people to actually make a choice to ride the bus," city transit Director Peter Behrman said. Each bus costs about $670,000. Eighty percent of that is being paid by grants from the Federal Transit Administration, Behrman said. The remainder comes from city bond money. They are low-emission, fuel-efficient diesel-electric hybrid vehicles, Behrman said. The regular fare will remain $1. Bus stops will be spaced about a half-mile to a mile along the route. The city will offer corporate naming rights for each bus shelter and advertising space on the buses. The buses will begin rolling Dec. 11. SOURCE: ABQTRIB.com | ||
