A Hybrid Sports Car Hits the Scene in Britain June 2005Two ex-Jaguar consultant engineers, Tony Martindale and Tim Bishop, are on their way to creating a V10 hybrid-engine sports car in the U.K.Development on their Connaught coupé, which was presented as a styling mock-up last year at a British classic car festival, has now been boosted by a government grant. The U.K. Energy Saving Trust awarded the entrepreneurs nearly a million dollars to aid in their development of the V10 hybrid power plant. The new 2.1-liter engine gets an assist from a 48v electric motor, which is recharged using the regenerative braking system. This new engine will be installed in the ultralightweight Connaught Type D sport coupé. The longitudinal engine is located at the midfront of the vehicle, which has been set up for a rear-wheel drive. The company aims to become the world's first "virtual" car company: Development is being done in-house, but manufacturing will be outsourced. However, there is one obstacle: a need for a further $10 million investment to make the car's production feasible. What this means to you: Hmmm. A hybrid V10 sports car. What say we take up a collection and get this honey runnin'? SOURCE: Edmunds | ||
