Hyundai's Hybrid Car Motor August 2004

Hyundai Heavy Industries has developed an electric motor for a fuel-saving hybrid car, its officials said Sunday.

``We have successfully run the experimental electric motor, which is used with an internal combustion engine for the hybrid system, on the Hyundai Motor sports utility vehicle the Tucson for the past 10 months, they said.

HHI said it is the first company after those in Japan to succeed in the commercialization of the electric motor for a gas-electric hybrid system.

The electric motor market for hybrid cars is expected to reach more than 13 trillion won ($11.27 billion) worldwide by 2010, according to the company.

Concerned about the environment and rising gasoline prices, global automakers have stepped up efforts to develop energy-efficient vehicles powered by hybrid systems. Hyundai Motor will introduce the country's first mass-produced hybrid car late next year
