New GM Sequel Hybrid Car Unveiled! January 2005General Motors Co. unveiled its newest hybrid automobile, the GM Sequel, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Saturday while competitors were showing their latest automotive toys.GMs Sequel uses fuel cell technology but has computerized motors independent on each wheel for controlling speed and braking, which the auto manufacturer says makes it accelerate, or perform, as good as standard sized cars in its class. Honda Motor Co is touting its newest hybrid car, the FCX, in New York. The fuel-cell powered vehicle will be used in municipal fleets in New York but at the present time will not be made available to consumers. While both hybrid vehicles are powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the auto industry is slow to change over from gasoline-driven cars, though unlike the electric-powered cars, automotive manufacturers are giving consumers more access to hydrogen vehicles. In Texas this week, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) launched a fleet of hydrogen powered buses to be used at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Ford plans on developing three hybrid gas/electric vehicles for consumers and to rush the hybrid Mercury Mariner sport-utility vehicle to showrooms later this year -- a year ahead of schedule to capitalize on consumer interest in hybrids.
