GM Helps Drive Chinese Hybrid Technology November 2004General Motors (GM) chairman and chief executive, Rick Wagoner, has highlighted the importance of research into alternative fuel development and energy sources in response to high oil prices during a visit to China.GM and its main partner, Shanghai Automotive Industry (SAIC), have agreed to collaborate on a project related to hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. SAIC will test run its first hybrid diesel-electric bus next year, based upon GM's hybrid engine technology. Mr Wagoner speculated on why China has become a pioneer of fuel-cell technology: "The demand for energy sources are going to grow here as the economy grows and if there is a place in the world where it makes sense to develop (alternative energy sources) it seems like China would be one of the leading opportunities." "GM is striving to have commercially viable technology available by the end of this decade. Our goal is to become the first automaker to profitably sell 1 million hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. We believe China can and will play a key role in making this possible," he told China Daily. Mr Wagoner expects China to become GM's second largest market this year - second only to the US in terms of unit sales. China is rapidly becoming the epicentre of the hybrid fuel revolution - DaimlerChrysler will introduce three hydrogen fuel-cell buses to Beijing next year, and Toyota recently announced that it would manufacture its hybrid Prius model in China.
