Chevy to Make Midsize Hybrid Car October 2004General Motors plans to get in the gas-electric hybrid game by unveiling a midsize Chevrolet Malibu hybrid for 2007, the Chicago Tribune said.Tribune auto columnist Jim Mateja says GM is committed to the high-tech, fuel-saving technology that will compete with the popular Toyota Prius, Honda Accord and Civic hybrids and the new Ford Fusion hybrid set to debut in 2007. Ford introduced a gas-electric Ford Escape hybrid small van for 2005. Japanese automakers have a seven year lead in developing hybrid vehicle technology that uses batteries to assist an efficient gasoline engine when extra power is needed. The vehicles idle on battery power. GM also plans a line of full-size trucks and SUVs that electronically shut off the engine at idle to save gasoline. Though we're late to the party, we'll be better than Toyota when it comes to performance and value, Jim Queen, GM vice president for North American engineering told Mateja.
